Alms Tax as Spiritual Offerings.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alms_tax

In 1993 I noticed people made Offerings to Spirits (Angels, etc.), by placing items on the ground such as wrapped candy, money (cash), bottled drinks, silk cloth, or other offerings. In some cultures this is a religious requirement, like the Alms Tax in Islamic faith or the Gathering Plate in Christianity. In Ancient Egypt offerings were made at the entrance to Temples, or as taxes to the Priesthood who served as teachers, bankers, and protectors. Today this idea is largely controlled by charity groups, some of which are fake and are only interested in profit.

People should deliver gifts when greeting, instead of a handshake or bow. A small gift, something meaningful as a salutation of status.
